WEDDING READINGS
In a Catholic marriage ceremony (with or without a Mass), there are usually four Scriptural readings. The first reading is chosen from the Old (Hebrew) Testament; that is followed by a Psalm (and a spoken or sung response); then there is a second reading that is chosen from the New Testament (usually from the Letters of St Paul). The fourth and final reading is from one of the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. The Gospel reading is often chosen by the priest.
Click on the words below to get a representative sampling of each category. Many of these selections are often included in Catholic weddings, but remember that you can choose from all parts of the Old and New Testaments. The readings you choose should speak to your relationship with one another, your relationship to God and your understanding of your faith. Make sure that they are meaningful to you both, and that they are communicating what you want to say about your love for one another and the meaning of this union that you are publicly declaring and celebrating. Be sure to consult with your priest about the reasons for your choices so he can speak to them meaningfully in the homily.
Old Testament (usually the first reading)
Responsorial Psalms and music(often sung by cantor, with responses from congregation)
New Testament (third reading)
Gospel Reading (often chosen by the priest)
