Easter Vigil

The Easter Vigil, a central Catholic liturgy celebrated on Holy Saturday evening,is considered the most important night for the Church. It marks the beginning of the 50 day Easter season and commemorates Christ's resurrection, often including baptisms and the lighting of the Paschal candle.

  • The Easter Vigil typically consists of four parts:

    • The Service of Light: This begins with the blessing of the Easter fire and the lighting of the Paschal candle, which is then carried into the darkened church.

    • Liturgy of the Word: This features seven readings from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament, recounting the history of salvation.

    • Liturgy of Baptism: Catechumens (those preparing for baptism) are baptized, confirmed, and receive their first Holy Communion

    • Liturgy of the Eucharist: The Mass continues with the Liturgy of the Eucharist, where the faithful receive communion.
