Hunger Sunday

  • Church of the Epiphany 239 East 21st Street New York, NY, 10010 (map)

On the last Sunday of each month, Epiphany parishioners gather after the 11:00 Mass to make sandwiches and then fan out to share these meals with our brothers and sisters that we find in need in surrounding neighborhoods. These Hunger Sundays are organized by Kim Salvo and Epiphany’s Social Justice Ministry and afford us a regular opportunity to engage with our community in a very tangible way.

Since beginning in 2019, the event has become a fixture on the parish’s monthly calendar. Participants regularly include a cross section of parishioners - young adults, seniors, families with children – all are represented. Hunger Sunday is an especially nice opportunity for new parishioners to give their time and talents and better connect with our faith community. In less than an hour, 10-12 dozen sandwiches are made, assembled with a drink, a snack and other necessities, such as a pair of socks, and then brought out by parishioners for distribution. If, for any reason, a parishioner is new to the ministry and would like a partner, there is always someone to accompany them.

One regular participant noted that this was their “favorite parish activity as it was truly the gospel in action”. Another remarked how important it is to have this monthly opportunity “to follow Jesus’ teaching to reach out to the marginalized”. Fr. Jim regularly exhorts us at the conclusion of Mass to be the “word of God and face of love to those we meet”. These Hunger Sundays are a wonderful way to do just that. Our next Hunger Sunday is scheduled for July 31st. Please join us in spreading God’s love.
